Private Client · Estate Manager & Household Director

Estate Manager and Household Director search.

The senior operator running a principal’s residences, properties and personal infrastructure.

What the role is

A short definition.

An Estate Manager or Household Director runs the day-to-day operation of a principal’s residence or portfolio of residences — staff management, budgets, procurement, maintenance, security coordination, event delivery and the invisible coordination that keeps a private household functioning to a standard. The role sits between household leadership (butler, house managers) and family office operations, and is typically accountable to the Chief of Staff or directly to the principal.

Core responsibilities

What we assess candidates against.

  • Managing household staff, from butlers and house managers to housekeeping, gardening and driving teams
  • Property management across primary residence and secondary estates (UK and international)
  • Budgets, procurement, contractor coordination and capital-project oversight
  • Event management, both routine and one-off (state visits, family gatherings, philanthropic events)
  • Security coordination alongside a dedicated Head of Security where present
  • Confidentiality and discretion across every element of principal-facing activity

When to run this search

Typical triggers.

When a principal acquires a second or third residence and existing house management can no longer coordinate across properties; on a change of principal residence; when an existing Estate Manager retires or moves on; when a household transitions from ad-hoc management to a professionalised operation.

How we search for this role

The specific approach we take.

The strongest candidates typically come from three pools: prior Estate Managers or House Managers for comparable UHNW principals; senior hospitality operators from ultra-luxury private property or private club operations; and senior military or naval officers with logistics and personnel leadership experience. Discretion and long-tenure fit weigh as heavily as capability. Every candidate is referenced deeply, always with the candidate’s written consent.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an Estate Manager and a Household Director?

Titles are used interchangeably across the market, but broadly: Estate Manager tends to indicate leadership across an estate or portfolio of properties, while Household Director indicates leadership of a single primary residence at scale. In both cases the role sits above house managers and butlers.

Do you place internationally?

Yes. Many of our Estate Manager mandates are international — placing UK-based candidates into households in the Gulf, Continental Europe, the Alps or North America, and vice versa. We coordinate visa, residency and tax considerations alongside the candidate’s legal counsel.

Is prior UHNW experience essential?

Almost always, yes. The judgement, discretion and standards required in a UHNW household are not something a candidate can pick up in the role — every appointment we make has prior comparable UHNW household or estate experience.

How long does the search take?

Ten to fourteen weeks. Estate Manager searches can run slightly faster than family office CFO searches because the candidate pool, while small, is more concentrated and better mapped.

How is compensation structured?

Base salary, discretionary bonus and, in many placements, accommodation or a housing allowance. Compensation varies widely by household size, international scope and expected working pattern (residential vs. commuter).
