Design & Architecture · Studio Director
Studio Director recruitment for leading UK design practices.
The senior creative-and-commercial leader running a design studio at scale. Retained, portfolio-led, senior-partner-led.
What the role is
A short definition.
A Studio Director combines senior creative leadership with the commercial responsibility for running a design or architectural practice — client relationships at the highest level, project portfolio composition, senior design output, and the culture that keeps a studio recognisable. It is a role that sits between the founder principals (in owner-led practices) and the design directors and project architects who deliver the work.
Core responsibilities
What we assess candidates against.
- Creative leadership at the top of the studio — setting aesthetic direction, reviewing senior design output
- Portfolio strategy — what work the studio pursues, what it declines, and how the mix of projects supports the practice
- Senior client relationship ownership, including new business at the level that shapes the studio’s next three years
- Talent leadership — hiring, developing and retaining design directors, senior architects, senior interior designers and specialist teams
- Studio operations, financial performance and cultural stewardship
- External representation — awards submissions, press, industry bodies, RIBA or equivalent professional engagement
When to run this search
Typical triggers.
When a founder or principal is preparing to step back and wants a Studio Director to hold the day-to-day leadership; when a growing studio needs a senior leader to add a functional practice area (residential, hospitality, commercial); on the departure of an incumbent Studio Director; when a practice merger or a new studio location requires senior leadership.
How we search
The specific approach we take.
Studio Director search is portfolio-led. Every candidate is assessed against their portfolio, their design philosophy and their client-relationship track record before any interview. The market is small and heavily networked; the strongest candidates are almost always closely watched by peer practices. Every mandate is retained and led personally by a partner with genuine understanding of the design and architecture market — its studios, its typologies and the specific project profiles that indicate a Studio Director-ready candidate.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Studio Director and a Design Director?
Studio Director is the senior commercial-and-creative leader of a studio, with responsibility for portfolio, people and financial performance in addition to design output. Design Director is a more creative-focused role, typically reporting to a Studio Director or founding principal, and focused on senior design leadership within a project or practice area.
Do you understand portfolio and creative work directly?
Yes. Portfolio review is a formal stage in every Studio Director mandate. We assess project histories, design philosophy and client-relationship track record before any candidate meets the client.
Do you handle Design Director as well as Studio Director searches?
Yes. The candidate pools overlap substantially, and many Design Director searches identify candidates who could also be the right Studio Director in a smaller practice — and vice versa.
How long does a Studio Director search take?
Twelve to sixteen weeks from brief to accepted offer is typical. Portfolio review and studio-culture-fit assessment add depth to the process.
How is compensation structured?
Base, discretionary bonus, and in many partner-track appointments a formal partnership pathway with equity participation. Studio Director compensation varies widely by studio size and project pipeline; London senior Studio Director packages typically sit in the £150k–£350k range for base plus bonus.
